Education: Summer Reading Program

This project seeks to provide books to children during the summer months while they are away from their traditional school setting so they can continue to increase their reading skills and encourage the love of reading. While many children are able to access the public library, others do not have that opportunity as often or at all. Therefore, we will meet the children where they spend a lot of time during the summer - the public swimming pool. Often, the public pools provide free swim days where many children who might not otherwise be able to afford to go to the swimming pool are able to attend - it is on those days that this project will be enacted. We will go to the swimming pools on those days and distribute books to children. The children can keep the books to read at home and they will be encouraged to visit the library for additional books.

Books can be purchased for as little as $1 each. Therefore, for every dollar donated, a child in the community can receive a book of his or her very own (many low-income children own few to no books). The goal of this project is to raise $500 to provide approximately 500 books to children.
