This project is to help fund students travel to Japan in 2026. The Sociology and Anthropology Department's study abroad program Explore Japan will take 12 Washburn students to Japan for about two weeks this summer. This is the first departmental study abroad program to Japan. The Explore Japan program is a great opportunity for students to learn about and experience Japanese society, culture, and people.
Japan is a great destination for a study abroad program in that Japan has long history and contemporary Japanese popular culture, particularly anime, manga, and video games, has significantly impacted the world. Through this program, students should be able to understand "how old meets new" and "how East meets West." And the program includes a wide range of cultural activities such as cooking and crafting beyond visiting cultural sites, museums, and Shinto and Buddhist temples.
We aim to raise $3,000 on Day of Giving to offset student expenses as they visit numerous museums and cultural landmarks and experience hands-on activities. As studying abroad can be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students, this excursion will be a transformative, life-changing experience for the students in the program.
Donations to this project will support the Sociology and Anthropology Department Travel Fund
