The Belize study abroad project is a service-learning study abroad program that connects Washburn University students with schools and community organizations in Belize to support wellness, inclusion, and classroom participation. Currently led by the Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program, students collaborate with teachers and caregivers to share trauma-informed approaches and strategies for addressing sensory, fine motor, and OT-related challenges in the classroom - areas Belizean educators have identified as key needs.
WU students will demonstrate the use of sensory and other OT materials directly in classrooms, modeling practical tools that support attention, behavior regulation, and learning. This work is especially meaningful as Belize currently has no formal occupational therapy education programs, licensure, or recognized OT organizations, and the need for OT-informed support is significant.
This is the second year the faculty leader has taken students to Belize, with a commitment to expanding the program annually. While OTA students currently participate, the program is designed to grow students from additional School of Applied Studies (SAS) programs and related departments across campus.
Donations help reduce student participation costs and fund the purchase of sensory, fine motor, and adaptive items that are donated to Belizean classrooms and care settings. Your support helps expand access to wellness--without borders.
Donation to this project will support the Occupational Therapy Program Fund.
