The fund from this project will be used to defray costs of professional exams and conference travel for Mathematics & Statistics students. We are asking our Mathematics Community of alumni and friends to consider donating one one-thousandth of their annual salary to support our students. One one-thousandth can be thought of in many ways: 1/1000, a tenth of a tenth of a tenth, (0.1) cubed, 1/10th of one percent, etc. However, no matter which mathematical representation you prefer, the result is a huge benefit to our students and a clear message that the Washburn Mathematics Community supports our students and believes in their success.
Your gift as part of the Day of Giving will make a real impact in these key areas:
Professional exams:
The cost of professional exams can be a heavy, yet necessary, burden to our students. The Department recommends that students in our Actuarial Track take at least two exams from the Society of Actuaries before graduation. Both of these exams cost $270. Students in our Secondary Education Track must pass both the Praxis Mathematics subject exam ($130). Students planning to continue their education in graduate school may be required to take the General Graduate Record Exam ($220) and/or the GRE Mathematics subject test ($150). In addition to the costs of these exams, study materials can run up to $200.

Conference Travel:
For many years the Mathematics and Statistics Department has had a strong presence at Kappa Mu Epsilon (KME) Conventions, with students not only attending, but also presenting their research projects. The Department has also taken students to other conferences including the Kansas Mathematics Association of America Regional Conference, the Nebraska Conference for Undergraduate Women in Mathematics, and the Midwest Mathematics and Statistics Student Conference.

Donations to this project will support the Math & Stats Student Support Fund.
