The history department has a well-established tradition of training historians and teachers of history, building from a foundation of survey courses in U.S. and world history, and moving on to a rich range of innovative upper-level offerings.
We are looking forward to continuing that tradition, and for that, we are working to expand scholarship offerings. For the coming year, we hope to grow the Shawnee County History Scholarship. The Shawnee County History Scholarship alongside the Shawnee County Thrives Scholarship will give hometown incoming students planning to major in history an additional scholarship and the opportunity to learn more about their home base.
Applicants for this scholarship are required to submit a 500-word essay on the history of Shawnee County to be reviewed by the history department. The selected author will be encouraged to present their findings to the local historical society, library or other public outlet to present their findings. This gives our students the opportunity to not only delve into the history of our county but also practice their presentation skills in a public setting.
