The criminal justice and legal studies department is raising funds on Day of Giving to support this popular, important lecture series as it enters its second year. The lecture series seeks to present a high-level speaker to discuss an important topic in the field of homeland security with the Washburn community.
On Nov. 12, 2020, the criminal justice and legal studies department held the inaugural Rick Rescorla Homeland Security Lecture Series event, “Public Health, Individual Rights, and Personal Responsibility: A Conversation with Dr. Rajeev Venkayya, Former Special Assistant to the President for Biodefense.” Over 180 individuals logged into the Zoom event to hear Dr. Venkayya, president of the Global Vaccine Business Unit at Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Ltd, discuss his efforts co-leading Takeda’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak and the role of individual rights and personal responsibility as they relate to COVID-19. The conversation was led by Francis Hoang, mcj ’00, who served with Dr. Venkayya in the George W. Bush White House as associate White House counsel and special assistant to the president.
