Students will be transformed by this immersive experience into the European culture. Through the study of art and music, students will develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for the global community.
As we move from bustling Rome to the hills of Tuscany, along the walls of Lucca and to the canals of Venice, students will hear Italian and the multiple languages spoken by other travelers, see the literal layers of history that mark Italy’s cities and countryside, the cultural complexity, social diversity and heterogeneity of contemporary art and music, all while becoming acquainted with Italy’s rich food traditions. Students will encounter iconic historical works of art and architecture, experience Italian opera in the setting where many productions in the operatic canon premiered and discover the history of Italian innovation in science. Music students will have an opportunity to perform an evening of opera arias in Tuscany, while art students will participate in a photography exhibit in the Art Building gallery on their return. Many of our students have never traveled beyond the Midwest or flown internationally. This study abroad will transform students by exposing them to a wonderfully complex part of the wider world and promoting a deeper understanding of the global community to which they belong.
Led by Washburn faculty Kelly Thor, art history; Marguerite Perret, art studio; and Joey DeSota, music; this study abroad trip has multiple destinations in Italy from May 18-28 in completion of the spring 2025 course Art and Culture Abroad.
The cost per student for travel and accommodations is $4,500. International Programs and departmental scholarships for art and music majors bring the price down as much as $2,000 per student, but that still leaves a balance of $2,500 - food and tuition not included. This can prove a hurdle for students who struggle just to pay their annual tuition. Our Day of Giving campaign will attempt to raise $500 per student for 32 students.
