Explore Korea Study Abroad Program

This project is to help fund students travel to South Korea in 2025. The Sociology and Anthropology Department's study abroad program Explore Korea will take Washburn 12 students to Korea for about two weeks this summer. This program is a great opportunity for students to learn about and experience Korean society, culture, and people. Recently, Korea has become a popular studying abroad designation thanks to a growing popularity of Korean culture including K-pop, K-dramas and K-cooking.

We aim to raise $3,000 on Day of Giving to offset student expenses as they visit numerous museums and cultural landmarks and experience hands-on activities like cooking and crafting. As studying abroad can be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students, this excursion will be a transformative, life-changing experience for the students in the program.

Your generosity will make study abroad possible for students with financial need and give them the opportunity to immerse themselves in new cultures, challenge their perspectives, and build skills to launch their careers.

Here are comments by the 2024 K-program students:

"Other countries have always been a sort of 'other' as I have never been outside of the United States before. I knew what was happening in them, but I did not fully understand the culture or truly what it was like to be there. While it was not for a long time the two-week period in which I was in South Korea was life-changing. Being able to experience a different culture helped me understand what different societal structures and achievements could be possible. It allowed me to see a bigger picture and more wide-scale thinking." - Ash

"This is an amazing experience that I wish everyone would try sometime in their lives! Studying abroad is eye opening and exciting!" - Angelika

"My time spend in South Korea was everything I had hope for and imagined. I am grateful to have been able to experience firsthand the lively lifestyle of the local communities and vibrant culture that South Korea had to offer. While in Seoul, I finally got an opportunity to visit museums, historical sites and K-pop events. That enlightened my understanding of Korean culture and gave me an opportunity to learn more about the citizens and their traditions. - Maria
